Overview

PURPOSE

The prime objective of the Area Production Coordinator at the Alpena plant is to plan and coordinate all production operations from the kiln feed silos to clinker transport system to clinker barn or finish grind silos on a daily, weekly monthly and yearly basis to assure that the desired quantity and quality of products are produced safely, on time and within budget in a clean and environmentally responsible manner, all while operating in a continuous improvement mode.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies in all work environments and areas.
  • Participates in the annual production budget preparation and contributes input to clinker manufacturing on clinker area.
  • Anticipates all refractory requirements for the kilns and raw grind furnaces and maintains refractory records. Obtains quotes from vendors and contractors and coordinates bricking and refractory repairs.  Directs brick removal and installation together with the Production Support Supervisor.
  • Coordinates the activities of the plant Yard team to provide material handling services for fly ash, gypsum, coal and clinker.
  • Functions as the Plant Emergency Coordinator who is responsible for coordinating all emergency response measures and serving as the chief of the plant emergency team.
  • Reviews the performance of the Production Assistants of his area and upgrades accordingly.
  • Formulates capital and cost savings projects to improve efficiency and submits appropriation requests to secure project capital.
  • Responsible for team development of assigned personnel by providing resources, training and direction needed to promote team process.
  • Assures that the department safety training and awareness program is implemented at the functional team level. Monitors the safety audit program.
  • The Area Production Coordinators are key members of the Cross Functional Teams which consist of key Production, Quality, Maintenance and Process personnel who are responsible for problem-solving, Safety & Housekeeping improvements and optimization of the kiln and clinker manufacturing area.
  • The Alpena kilns are equipped with waste heat boilers which produce steam to generate electricity. The coordinator is responsible for the safe, efficient operation of the kiln boilers and anticipates and recommends boiler tube maintenance and replacement requirements.  Maintains tube and element replacement records for boiler maintenance.
  • Provides support and assists the Process Department with any special projects or problems.
  • Responsible for team development of assigned personnel by providing resources, training and direction needed to promote team process.
  • Assures that the department safety training and awareness program is implemented at the functional team level. Monitors the safety audit program.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER JOBS

  • Supervises 6 Yard personnel including non-exempt salaried leaders, contract employees and summer student laborers and one production day inspector.
  • Responsible and accountable to the Production Manager to constantly monitor, give feedback, and control a departmental budget of approximately $6,500,000 in fixed costs and $13,500,000 in variable costs.
  • The Production Coordinators are key members of the Cross Functional Teams which consist of key Production, Quality, Maintenance and Process personnel who are responsible for problem-solving, improvements and optimization of the raw grind, kilns and powerhouse, and finish grind areas of the plant.
  • Interface with Management Team Leaders to enable scheduled maintenance to be performed on machinery in a timely, efficient manner.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Required Education:  Bachelor Degree

Required Work Experience:   7- 10 years’ experience in the cement industry.

Additional Requirements: Good understanding of milling systems & kiln operations, good communication skills, proven leadership capabilities, good organizational skills, good understanding of mechanical/electrical equipment and an understanding of cost control techniques.
